After escaping Nazi Germany, Ludwig Guttmann, a Jewish neurosurgeon, became the head of the National Spinal Injury Centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain. There Guttmann broke long-standing barriers for paraplegics through his revolutionary treatment methods and paved the way for the Paralympics. His groundbreaking contributions to science and sport have helped to change societal perceptions of the disabled, showing that they can become not only athletes but full members of society.
